Grafton, Illinois
Bald Eagle Viewing, December - January. Hundreds of migrating bald eagles roost in the trees on the shores of the Mississippi. Good viewing from the mud flats near the Alton Bridge and Lock in the south to Pere Marquette State Park in the north.

Mexico's Pacific Coast
Whale Watching Late November thru March 31. About 10,000 gray whales winter in Mexico. Best viewing from Tijuana to Huatulco, especially near Los Cabos. Call (212) 755-7261.

San Juan Capistrano, California
The Swallows Return on the Feast of St. Joseph. February 17. Swallow's Day Heritage Festival (mid-March) The swallows return from South America and the 200-year-old Spanish mission of San Juan Capistrano welcomes them with a traditional ceremony held each year on Mar 16 and a parade and procession on Mar 23 that is billed as the largest non-motorized parade in the United States. Throughout the week, a number of events are held in the town of San Juan Capistrano in celebration of the birds' return. Call (714) 493-4700 to confirm dates and times.

Cycle Vermont, Late September to mid-October. Although you can bicycle through Vermont much of the year, this period is timed to coincide with the maximum fall color. Bring your own bikes or rent. Stay in farmhouses or bed-and-breakfasts sprinkeled along the various routes.

The Chelsea Flower ShowHeld over 4 days during the last week of every May.
THE event for gardeners the world over takes place at The Royal Hospital Grounds in Chelsea. The first two-and-a-half days are reserved for memebers of the Royal Horticultural Society only. Royal Horticultural Society Hampton Court Palace Show, Held during the second week of every July.
The world's largest annual flower show. In the pastr few years, this show has become almost as well-established as the one in Chelsea. St. Petersburg, Russia
The White Nights of St. Petersburg. Late June, around the Summer Solstice. Mysterious, hazy light in a beautiful city. No ticket necessary.There's a music festival of the same name, in June.
